The Skilled Regional Sponsored visa (475) is initially based on meeting a point score. To qualify for the 475 visa, you must first pass basic requirements. You get points for your age, English competence, training, work experience and having an eligible relative (or a state) able to sponsor you. Once you meet these requirements, you may be eligible for the 475 visa if you score 100 points.

There are two pathways of the 475 visa:

Family Sponsorship

The 475 visa (family) requires sponsorship by an eligible relative. Your relative must be a permanent resident or citizen of Australia or an eligible New Zealand citizen. A sibling, parent, child, aunt, uncle, cousin or grandparent can sponsor you on a 475 visa. Your relative must live in a designated area of Australia to sponsor you on a 475. On a 475, you must live in the same designated area of Australia as your relative. The designated areas for a 475 (family sponsored) visa are:

• Anywhere in Victoria, South Australia, Northern Territory or Tasmania
• A 475 to Queensland: Anywhere outside the Brisbane metropolitan area
• A 475 to Western Australia: Anywhere outside the Perth metropolitan area
• A 475 to New South Wales: Anywhere except Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong                             

State Sponsorship

The 475 visa (state) requires sponsorship by an Australian state or territory that has your skilled job on its demand list. Each state has different lists for the 475 visa and lists are regularly updated. The 475 visa is a three year visa. You must live and work in the designated area of state that is sponsoring you on the 475 visa for three years.  The designated areas for a 475 (state sponsored) visa are:

• Anywhere in South Australia, Northern Territory or Tasmania
• A 475 to Victoria: Anywhere outside the Melbourne metropolitan area
• A 475 to Queensland: Anywhere outside the Brisbane metropolitan area
• A 475 to Western Australia: Anywhere outside the Perth metropolitan area
• A 475 New South Wales: Anywhere except Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong

Once you have lived in that area for two years (and worked for 12 months) on a 475 visa, you are eligible to apply for permanent residency and live in any part of Australia. Once you have activated your 475 visa, you and all migrating family members gain provisional status in Australia. The 475 visa gives you and your partner full work rights and a 475 visa starts you on the pathway to Australian residency.
