You may be eligible to apply for a 487 visa if you hold one of the following visas:
· Skilled – Graduate visa (485)
· Skilled – Recognised Graduate visa (476)
· Trade Skills Training visa (471)
· Working Holiday visa (417)
· Occupational Trainee visa (442)
You may also be able to apply for the 487 visa if you are a current or former overseas student.
There are two pathways of the 487 visa:
Family Sponsorship
The 487 visa (family) requires sponsorship by an eligible relative. Your relative must be a permanent resident or citizen of Australia or an eligible New Zealand citizen. A sibling, parent, child, aunt, uncle, cousin or grandparent can sponsor you on a 487 visa. Your relative must live in a designated area of Australia to sponsor you on a 487. On a 487, you must live in the same designated area of Australia as your relative. The designated areas for a 487 (family sponsored) visa are:
State Sponsorship
The 487 visa (state) requires sponsorship by an Australian state or territory that has your skilled job on its demand list. Each state has different lists for the 487 visa and lists are regularly updated. The 487 visa is a three year visa. You must live and work in the designated area of state that is sponsoring you on the 487 visa for three years. The designated areas for a 487 (state sponsored) visa are:
Once you have lived in that area for two years (and worked for 12 months) on a 487 visa, you are eligible to apply for permanent residency and live in any part of Australia. Once you have activated your 487 visa, you and all migrating family members gain provisional status in Australia. The 487 visa gives you and your partner full work rights and a 487 visa starts you on the pathway to Australian residency.
