You may be eligible for the 886 visa if you:
- Have completed an eligible course of study in Australia within the past six months
- hold a skilled Graduate (485) visa
- hold a Skilled – Recognised Graduate (476) visa
- hold a Trade Skills Training (471) visa
There are two pathways of the 886 visa.
Family Sponsorship
The 886 visa (family) requires sponsorship by an eligible relative. Your relative must be a permanent resident or citizen of Australia or an eligible New Zealand Citizen. A sibling, parent, child, aunt or uncle can sponsor you on the 886 visa. On the 886 visa, you can live anywhere in Australia. The 886 visa allows you to travel to and enter Australia for up to five years after the visa is activated. Thus, you have the option of returning to your home country prior to migrating permanently on the 886 visa.
State Sponsorship
The 886 visa (state) requires sponsorship by an Australian state or territory that has your skilled occupation on its demand list. Each state has different lists for the 886 visa and lists are regularly updated. The 886 visa is a three year visa. You must live and work in the state that is sponsoring you on the 886 visa for three years. Once you have lived for two years (and worked for 12 months) on the 886 visa, you are eligible to live in another state.
Once you have activated your 886 visa, you and all migrating dependents gain permanent residency in Australia. In a nutshell:
- The 886 visa gives you and your partner full work rights
- The 886 visa enables you to sponsor others for permanent residency
- The 886 visa starts you on the pathway to Australian citizenship
- The 886 visa allows you and your dependents to receive subsidised healthcare, childcare and education
