General Skilled Migration

Australia faces a long term skills shortage and each year the Australia government grants tens of thousands of skilled visas to eligible migrants.

The Skilled Occupation List (SOL) lists the jobs in shortage. It includes accountants,  IT professionals, construction professionals, nurses, engineers, childcare managers, teachers, urban planners and social workers. Due to Australia's growing infrastructure, doznes of trades occupations are also in demand, incuding telecommunications,mechanics, welders, fabricators, aircraft trades, bricklayers, painters, stonemasons, carpenters, joiners, glaziers, gas fitters, plumbers, plasterers, sheet metal workers, panel beaters, electricians, tilers and instrument trades.

Qualifying for skilled migration is based on a points system. Points are earned through factors such as your age, your work experience, your trade or occupation and your English language ability. Other points may be added to your score if you have close relatives living in Australia, have studied or worked in Australia previously or are able to invest in Australia. You also get points if you are sponsored by a state that needs your skills.

There are several subclasses of skilled visa; some grant permanent residency from the day of arrival in Australia, whilst others are initially provisional, but provide a pathway to residency over three years.
