We would like to go to Australia and would like to know how much money we need to have in our bank accounts to apply for visas. I am a 42 year old qualified boilermaker with 20 years of experience.

Adam,

Thanks for your question. If you are applying for a 175 skilled independent visa, you do not need to show any assets. Based on your information above, you will be eligible for the 175 visa if you sit the IELTS English test and score 7.0 in each section. On the otherhand, if you are sponsored by a state on a 176 visa (where the passmark is lower), you do not need to sit IELTS. Each state has its own requirements to show assets. Some states required you to show AUD$20,000 of assets (and an additional smaller amount for each dependent), whilst others require you to research the cost of living in that state, and show a budget. Both the 175 and 176 visas give you permanent residency.
